The attention of EDEN have been drawn to a fresh oil spill that occurred very close to Oando’s Ogboinbiri Flow Station at Ogboinbiri community environment of Apoi clan, Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa state, making this the fourth oil spill to hit the area since September 2024.

Investigation from community sources at the spill yesterday revealed that the spill happened as a result of equipment failure; with the rupture at 6’Oclock position (directly under the pipe).

This current spill which occurred on Saturday, 3rd May, 2025 is the FOURTH equipment failure related incident between September, 2024 and 3rd May, 2025.

EDEN’S OBSERVATION:
These reoccurring oil spills can be averted if the oil companies can carry out regular integrity checks on their facilities, with prompt replacement of deserving pipelines.

EDEN’S RECOMMENDATION
We call on the company to carry out a prompt recovery of spilt crude oil, followed by a well organized and managed cleanup and remediation of the impacted environment.

We call on Oando to take swift action, as the rainy season may escalate the spill to higher levels of environmental damages.
