ALERT: Oil Spill Devastates Obololi Creek – EDEN Calls on NOSDRA, Shell for Immediate Action!

The Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) has received an alert regarding an oil spill from a Shell pipeline in Obololi Creek, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

The spill occurred on the night of Sunday, February 16, 2025, into Monday, February 17, 2025. This marks the first time an oil spill has directly contaminated the community’s river, their only source of water for drinking, cooking, and daily activities.

Community members report that the affected pipeline, laid by Shell in 1973, has not been replaced since. With pipelines from both Shell and Oando traversing the area, urgent action is needed.

EDEN calls on the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and Shell to respond immediately by:

  • Providing emergency drinking water to the community.
  • Mobilizing for a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV).
  • Initiating cleanup, remediation, and compensation for affected residents.
